Item Details

Description

Papua New Guinea, 20th century CE. A tall wood carving of a Janus-headed pair of birds, made to be the top of a post with a small notch on its base for insertion. Each bird has a delightful countenance, with a long beak with clear details and eyes carved as incised concentric circles. Tall flares rise up on either side of the birds' heads, perhaps mimicking crested feathers or wings. Their sides are carved with a variety of symbols. Below them is a slab of wood, flat on one side, and inset on the other side, with holes carved out on its edges. Papua New Guinea has a rich native bird life, and inhabitants would have observed them frequently in their daily life. This one resembles the Great cormorant, which has a crest, but could be based on any number of sea birds with long beaks. Comes with custom stand. Size: 6.6" W x 25.5" H (16.8 cm x 64.8 cm)
