Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Sepik River region, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A dramatic, brightly colored wooden decorative carving, a panel painted on both sides with identical motifs: a mask-like, round face set into an impressive headdress topped by two long-beaked, heron-like birds. These birds stand atop several openwork shapes, all decorated with finely painted white, red, black, and bright yellow motifs. Size: 10" W x 25.15" H (25.4 cm x 63.9 cm); 26" H (66 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: ex-private Tucson, Arizona, USA collection; ex-Ron Perry collection; Ron Perry collected art and artifacts for more than 40 years in New Guinea and the South Pacific. He collaborated with Carolyn Leigh to write a book entitled, "Art Dealer in the Last Unknown: Ron Perry & New Guinea Art: the early years 1964-1972" (2011)
