Description
SHIELDS WILLIAM: (1892-1921) Canadian Fighter Ace (24 victories) of World War I, recipient of the DFC (Distinguished Flying Cross) and Bar. Portion of a D.S., W. E. Shields, one page, small oblong 8vo, n.p. (France), n.d. (1918). This document is evidently neatly clipped from a Combat Report, the typed text stating, in full 'At 6-45., whilst on Offensive Patrol, I saw 4 E[nemy] A[ircraft], Phalz Scouts, over GUERBIGNY at 12,000ft. I was at 14,000ft., and dived on 1 E.A. and fired 3 bursts for about 50 rounds each, E.A. went down vertically and I saw large portions of his wings fall off. I was then dived on by 3 other machines, apparently French Spads, and had to dive for our own lines.' The text relates to Shields victory whilst piloting a Royal Aircraft Factory S.E. 5A in 1918. VG
