Description
Very Fine Helen Samson Needlework Sampler Dated 1828. Signed "Helen Samson Sewed In This Year 1828 Age 9 Years". Flanked by father' name "William Samson" and mother's maiden name "Helen Young". Below a hymnal verse "Jesus all atoning lamb, Thine, and only Thine, I am; Take my body, spirit, soul; Only thou possess the whole". Hymnal written by Charles Wesley a leader of the Methodist movement, (b.1807, d.1788). Outstanding silk needlework on linen depicting a large 3-1/2 story house with blue roof and two wings. Animals include a large cat, tiger, spread-wing eagle and reclining stag. Having numerous other smaller animals and devices including trees, potted flowers, hearts etc. All encompassed in an undulating floral vine border. Bold and fine example of a needlework sampler. Image size 19-1/2" x 20-1/2", in an antique birds eye maple ogee molded frame, 25" x 26-1/4" overall. Condition: Very good with minor wear and holes.
