BUFFALO POTTERY BLUE WILLOW EARLY CERAMIC ARTICLES, LOT OF FOUR, comprising one 4 1/16" D advertising ephemera booklet entitled "The Song of the Willow Pattern" by Minnie Child, produced by the Goodall, Backhouse, and Company in Leeds, England; and three 8" D plates having the "Blue Willow" pattern and scalloped rims, with three different marks reading "SEMI-VITREOUS / BUFFALO POTTERY", "OLD WILLOW / BUFFALO POTTERY" having the image of a pagoda and foliate design between, and "FIRST OLD WILLOW WARE / MANUFACTURED IN / AMERICA", two with 1905 and 1906 dates. Buffalo, New York. Circa 1905.
Plates undamaged with some staining and expected glaze crazing; front cover of booklet is loose from staple, one part of edge is separated, and small tea on front cover of pamphlet, otherwise undamaged.
Provenance: From the collection of the late Phillip M. Sullivan.
Catalogue Note: The "Blue Willow" pattern is said to be based on the Chinese story of a young girl who runs away with a young man, only for both of them to be killed by the man who the young girl was betrothed to through an arranged marriage. The doves represent the souls of the two young lovers. The "Blue Willow" pattern has been popular since the 18th century.
