Item Details
Description
This exquisite painting measures 51.5cm wide by 39cm tall including the brocade mounting. It was painted in the middle of the Edo Period which roughly translates 1675-1750. The quality and detail of the painting is really fantastic, better than many other works. Unfortunately, there is significant rubbing paint loss especially on the right hand side obscuring the horse’s legs and part of a roof. Thankfully most of the important action is taking place on the left hand side of the work.

The scene appears to be a message or communication that has reached a Kyoto emperor. It is unknown which section of the Imperial Palace the scene takes place in but, the main buildings are, among other halls, the Shishin-den (???, Hall for State Ceremonies), Seiryo-den (???, Emperor's Habitual Residence), Ko-gosho (???, Court Room), o-gakumonjo (????, Imperial Study or Library), and a number of residences for the empress, high-ranking aristocrats and government officials.

The ladies are elaborately dressed in what is known as Jyuni-Hitoe or a 12 layer kimono a practice which was reserved or royalty. The man beside the horse likely handed a letter to one of the court attendants who presented it to the emperor.

There are restorations to the painting in places however do not detract from the scene. It is ready to be framed by the new owner.
