Description
Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Veracruz, ca. 400 to 600 CE. A fabulously spooky blackware pottery skull ocarina, its ghastly hollow form delineated with optic and nasal cavities, realistic indentations above the temples, and an eerie toothy grin. Two finger holes beside the optic cavities allow for a rich variety of haunting sounds. Instruments like this example played a major role in Pre-Columbian life as music was included in various rites of passage ceremonies, funerals, and even during warfare. Size: 4.5" L x 3.875" W x 4.5" H (11.4 cm x 9.8 cm x 11.4 cm)
