Item Details
Description
14th century AD. A bronze heater-shaped pendant with pierced lug to the upper edge, blue enamelled arms with escutcheon for the Mortimer family. 6.82 grams, 37mm (1 1/2"). Found Northamptonshire, UK. [No Reserve] We are informed by an officer of the Mortimer History Society that this could have been the property and the arms of Roger Mortimer of Chirk, or perhaps of one of his close descendants, who campaigned with Edward I at Falkirk in 1298 and at Caerlaverock in 1300; he went on to rebel against Edward II and died in the Tower of London in 1326. Roger was second son of Roger Mortimer, Lord of Wigmore (died 1282 AD) and uncle of Roger Mortimer, 1st Earl of March; the direct male line died out in 1504.
