Description
1389-1404 AD. A discoid lead papal bulla of Boniface IX with two bearded faces to one face separated by a cross, 'SPA.SPE' above; to the other the legend 'BON/IFATIVS.PP.VIII'. 49 grams, 37mm (1 1/2"). Property of an Essex gentleman; acquired on the UK art market. Pope Boniface IX was born Pietro Tomacelli, from the baronial Casarano famiy in the Kingdom of Naples. He ruled during the Western Schism when Clement VII and Benedict XIII, maintained the Roman Curia in Avignon, under the protection of the French monarchy. Boniface was neither a learned theologian nor a natural administrator, but was elected for his tactfulness and caution during the Schism. He fortified the Castell Sant'Angelo and the bridges over the River Tiber against an expected French-inspired assault, and used his political power to enhance the fortunes of the church which were severely reduced by the Schism. He died after a short illness in 1404.
