Description
1572 LAW Decretales Pope Gregory IX Medieval Catholic Church Canon anti-Jewish
“How wondrously considerate of us is God’s pity! How priceless a love of charity which would sacrifice a son to redeem a slave!” ― Pope Gregory IX
The Decretales of Pope Gregory IX were an important source of medieval Canonic Law. This papal decree was one of the defining works that gave power to the pope over the Universal Church. Because of the importance and longstanding impact the Decretales had, Pope Gregory IX’s main work remains the basis for canon law and has only minimally been modified by the general laws of the Catholic Church.
Originally written in 1234, this Catholic doctrine included many anti-Jewish sentiments, in particular the “perpetua servitus iudaeorum” stating that all Jews would be servants until the end times. Because of this, Jews were suppressed from having any sort of direct influence in political or ecclesiastical decisions for centuries.
This 1572 printing was issued with red and black ink plus a woodcut vignette on title page, decorative woodcut initials, and marginal side notes. In addition to the notes, this printing includes a thorough annotated commentary.
