Description
1st-4th century AD. An iron folding stool frame or stand with ribbed balusters, legs each with square-section central element and octagonal-section outer ends; transverse stringers to each end; square flange to the inner edge of each leg, polyhedral to the outer edge, polyhedral stops to the hinge-pins; offered with canvas seat for display purposes. 1.6 kg, 49cm (19 1/4"). Property of an Essex collector; acquired on the European art market. This simple construction and ease of storage meant that this object was ideal for use by senior officers as the army moved during a campaign.
