Description
12th-15th century AD. A set of iron fittings for a flail comprising: hand-forged tubular socket with overlapped closure, flat-section loop, hole to lower edge to accept a fixing peg; six links, each a loop with ends coiled about the shank, and connecting ring; a polyhedral head with D-shaped link and collar. Cf. image of a flail in the Psalter of Queen Melisande reproduced in Nicolle, D. Arms and Armour of the Crusading Era 1050-1350, London, 1999, item 732 (H"). 546 grams, 53cm (20 3/4"). From the family collection of a London gentleman; formed in the late 1940s-1950s; thence by descent. [No Reserve]
