Description
Pen and Ink of a Charleston Flower Lady by by Hugh F. McGregor (1923-2015) of Charleston, South Carolina. Professionally framed and triple matted, in frame measures 16.50"x19"x1". Weight is 3 pds 13 oz. Hugh McGregor was known for his Charleston Regional Folk Art Paintings. Signed and dated 1960 by the artist. Born in Charleston, SC in 1923, he studied illustration and studio art. Hugh McGregor served in the Navy from 1939 to 1945. He traveled to Murmansk, Russia and went on to sail to ports such as Casablanca and Oran in North Africa. After the war, Hugh partnered with his brother John McGregor to open McGregor Brothers Grocery Store, which operated at 519 Meeting Street in Charleston for 17 years. He then launched McGregor’s Building & Real Estate, a successful venture he ran for 30 years. During this time, he began to paint again, once more returning to his greatest passion. This, and the fact that he was also an avid collector of Art, led him to open McGregor’s Art and Framing Gallery in Charleston, a business continued by his family today.
