Hand Carved 3D Mixed Media Folk Art Wood Sculpture "The Sunday Sermon" by South Carolina Folk Artist Silas Dekind. Measures 24.50x21"x1" Weight is 9 pds. PROVENANCE: Descendents of the Corning Glass Works. Silas DeKind is a soft-spoken man who hails from South Carolina. A truck driver by trade, Silas is currently on disability due to a spinal injury suffered in a trucking mishap. He is now focusing much of his energy in creating 3-D works of art crafted out of plywood, Pine, twigs, frayed rope, and other found materials. His paints are primarily acrylic, although he often dilutes the paint with water for a softer look. The detailed wood carving featured in most of his art is by far the most painstaking part of his creative process, but also the most challenging and rewarding. Much of Silas Dekind's art has a spiritual theme, including recurring baptism scenes reflecting his experiences in the South Carolina Lowcountry and other parts of the Deep South. DeKinds Grandfather was the caretaker of the White House Plantation, which was located not far from his present day Georgetown, SC home. Although he received 2 years of formal art training at Coastal Carolina University, he still considers much of his art as self taught and a gift from God. His work was first displayed at the Committee for African American History Observance in Georgetown SC. Two of his works were selected for a exhibit at the State Museum in Columbia SC. His work is displayed at The National Cathedral Foundation;s College of Preachers in Washington DC,The Hickory Museum of Art in NC and in numerous private and public South Carolina Collections.
