PENNSYLVANIA/MAINE, 1839-1929
An oil on paper landscape painting by Naturalist Xanthus Smith. Xanthus, son of Russell Smith (1812-1898) inherited much of his fathers style and aesthetic showing influence from the Hudson River School. The work depicts Dunollie Castle in Oban, Scottland when viewed from Oban Harbor. Three figures are seen in a dinghy rowing from the foreground to a sailboat in the middle ground. The work is signed and dated in the lower right corner.
Provenance: Purchased through RISD Art for Your Collection from Vose Galleries, Boston, December, 1980.
Dimensions: Canvas measures 7 1/8" by 10 1/4", framed 11 3/8" by 14 3/4"
