A figural ocean landscape depicting mariner figures in a small sailing boat, surrounded by crashing waves, and additional, larger sailing ships to background. Artist red signature and dated to lower right XANTHUS SMITH 1901. The artist is renowned as a marine painter and for his illustrations of the American Civil War. His work is held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the United States Naval Academy. Presented mounted to a wood stretcher. Unframed.
