Early breech loading conversion of a Civil War musket by J&G Needham, performed in Trenton, New Jersey. Circa 1869. Almost all of these conversions were Bridesburg muskets from Alfred Jenks & Son. Most of these guns were used in the Fenian Brotherhood uprising before being converted. They were seized by U.S. authorities but were released and then converted using the Needham patent. The Fenians attempted another invasion of Canada in May of 1870. Barrel is finished in the white. Three barrel bands stamped "U", steel forend tip and rod, standard 1861 two leaf pattern folding rear sight. Lock is stamped "1865" with U.S. eagle and "Bridesburg". Fairly strong "E.S.A." cartouche on left side of stock. Light salt and pepper on from having been cleaned. Strong legend. Lock and conversion block are grey patina. Trigger guard cleaned in the white. Walnut stocks are excellent. Previous owner named carved on right side of stock. Martially inspected "H" on buttplate. Strong clean rifling.
