Description
Manufactured 1870 to 1873 with 11,533 made. These were built using surplus 1861 Springfield parts. Barrel and frame are numbered 13228. Barrel is finished in the white. Has folding ladder Civil War-type rear sight. Block is stamped "1869 U.S." with eagle. Lockplate is dated 1863 and stamped "U.S. Springfield" with eagle. Two barrel bands stamped "U" with sling swivel on forward band. Rear band is pitted. Steel cleaning rod. "E.S.A." cartouche in oval on left side, visible not readable. Barrel is clean with some age freckling. Lock is grey-brown patina as is trigger guard. Very good wood with numerous war dings and chipped at top of wrist at breech/tang. Fine action. Visible rifling with black powder abrasion. These rifles are very early Indian War trapdoors.
