Description
This desk was made by Civil War soldier Stephen M. Miles. He died November 21, 1926 in Hanover, Michigan. He was in Company C 7th Pennsylvania Regiment of Cavalry. He Enlisted 12/31/1863 and was discharged on 8/23/1865. He signed the desk on the right side of the top drawer in pencil. There are a lot of tramp art pieces attached to the desk. The most significant is a crossed musket and sword. There are also hearts. Around 95% of the tramp work is still present and original. There are a few replacement parts and a few areas missing. The top part has original glass doors with a shelf inside. Original blue paint. The desk folds out to reveal a work station. The original lining is worn and has some loss. There are 8 smaller drawers inside made from cigar boxes. There are 3 large drawers on the outside. There is a dark glazing over the wood surface with a crazed patina. The entire piece has general wear from age and use including some scuffs, scratches, and nicks. Some losses to surface veneer. The piece was made in two pieces. Measures about 25-¾ inches long by 15 inches wide and 68-¾ inches tall, when assembled.
