Description
Curved two stage body of 10 inches, stages separated by scalloping, relief ring carved near spout. Slightly convex wood plug with hand forged loop for sling. Engraved near top "JULY 3* 1776 * THIS HORN/MD*BY" with name removed during period of use. Expertly engraved city scenes with rooves, steeples, a horse, and flags. Some towns shown include Newburgh, Poughkeepsie, Albany, New Windsor, Tappon, and others, all inscribed with phonetic spellings of towns. Very good condition, as the horn was cut down in the period at both ends. Mellow yellow patina with a few scattered marks from use. Plug with some losses to finish. Similar example by this carver is in Tom Grinslade’s book "Powder Horns: Documents of History" on page 95. Serial Number-.;
