New England Engraved Nautical Powder Horn.
New England Engraved Nautical Powder Horn.
Item Details
Description
Curved 13-3/4 inch body with raised section, inscribed with initials "J.P." and engraved with a mermaid, an upright monkey with a walking stick, a snake in a tree, biting a fox, and detailed borders, reminiscent of New England engraving. Finely carved spout with two relief scalloped rings , half circles engraved around the lower ring. Slightly bulbous wooden plug. This horn was probably carved by a sailor. The original 1757 illustration showing the monkey depicted on this horn was found and a copy comes with the powderhorn. Very good condition, wood plug shows dry patina with losses to finish and raised grain. Body has a nice dark patina with some scattered marks, areas of wear to carving, and some period additions and minor removals of engraving. A few scattered marks from use.
