Description
In the 18th & 19th centuries, New Bedford, Massachusetts was the whaling capital of the world. These two items depict a scene of the crossroads of the main streets in New Bedford; Purchase Street and Union Street. The painting is signed by the artist: "A. Sharples." There is also a note on the back stating this painting was done from looking at a post card. The painting has a nice rich color. The painting was probably done in the early quarter of the 20th century. The painting measures 17 x 13 inches. The tile is a ceramic inserted into a wood base. It has nice deep brown coloration and most likely dates to the 19th century. It has suffered many cracks, chips, and minor losses. It measures 6-1/2 inches square, painting measures 17 x 13 inches.
