Item Details
Description
This rare and possibly one of a kind surviving broadside from the July 4, 1845 celebration in Nunda Valley, New York is quite impressive. It was photographed and featured in the book "The Last Muster" by Maureen Taylor as part of the Valley Forge Antiques Collection. Maureen’s book featured surviving photographs of soldiers from the Revolution as old men. It was appropriate to include in this book as the surviving veterans are featured in the 1845 celebration. The broadside features a wonderful large American Eagle with a banner reading “Fourth of July, 1845”. The piece reads “Fourth of July Celebration at Nunda Valley. Order of the Day. The people will assemble in front of the Nunda House at 11 o’clock. A.M. at the ringing of the bell, and after forming a procession, proceed through State, Massachusetts, and Church (added in period pencil) to the Baptist Church in the following order: 1. Martial Music. 2. Chaplain & Clergy, 3. Revolutionary Soldiers, 4. President, Orator & Officers, 5. Ladies, 6. Citizens and Strangers. Where the Declaration of Independence will be read and an Oration pronounced by C. C. Chafee, M.D., with National Songs by the Band. From the Church the procession will march in the same order to an artificial Arbor, near State Street, where they will sit down to a dinner fitted up for the occasion. After the cloth is removed will be presented a series of toasts, both regular and voluntary, accompanied by a National Salute, with appropriate music; after which the assemblage will disperse. In the evening will be a grand display of fire works. The Music of the day will be under the charge of Mr.Brooks and company, who in the evening will give a splendid concert at the Presbyterian hurch. Doors open at 7 ½ o’clock. Gentlemen and Ladies from this and adjacent towns are invited to attend the celebration. By order of the Committee. The broadside is framed in acid free matting & UV protected glass. It is in a period 19th century frame. The broadside alone measures around 21.5 x 15 inches. The entire piece measures 26 x 21 inches. The broadside has some wear from age. There is evidence that it was matted for a long time in unprotected glass which has caused a shade difference where the matting was. There are some minor losses around the edges. The piece also has folds with some minor losses in areas on the folds. It is secure and protected in the current frame.
