Item Details
Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 215 to 217 CE. Caracalla AR Denarius. (2.8g). Rome, 202 AD. ANTONINVS PIVS AVG, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right / PART MAX PONT TR P IIII, two captives bound and seated back to back at base of trophy. Cf BMCRE 233, 393 and pl 37, 14. RSC 179a. Css 562. Size: 0.75" W (1.9 cm)

The antoninianus, thought to have been valued at 2 denarii, was introduced by Caracalla in 215 as a way to create inflation (initially they contained only 1.5 times the silver of a denarius) and deal with lessening quantities of silver coming from Imperial territories and the exhaustion of the Iberian silver mines.
