From the African deserts to the Rocky Mountains, from the dunes of Dubai to the open plains of Australia, the Toyota Land Cruisers - both the gas-powered FJ and the diesel-powered BJ - stand alone as the most reliable, long-lasting, and nearly unbreakable vehicle that will always get you anywhere you need to go. First called the BJ25, it was Japan_s answer to the American Jeep and the British Land Rover.
During World War II, the Imperial Japanese Army reverse-engineered the Jeep, and perfected it within a decade. Soon enough, the American Army was placing orders for the Toyota to assist in the Korean Conflict, and by the mid-'60s, the ever-improving Land Cruiser was Toyota_s best-selling vehicle. Today, the surviving examples are prized by collectors for their rugged durability and efficiency. It took Toyota eight years to sell the first 100,000 Land Cruisers and, in just five more years, total production topped 300,000 units, with America, Brazil, and Australia being the largest markets.
First produced in 1951 for Japan only, by 1960 it was Toyota_s entry into the world_s off-road automotive market, and it survived through 1984. Just a bit larger than the Jeep CJ, nearly all are two-door models with a removable hardtop roof, and locking dual-range 4WD hubs. Today, the vintage Land Cruisers are still widely used for off-road driving and rock climbing and, thus, pristine examples that have not been chopped or modified are simply getting harder to find.
This nicely restored two-owner diesel powered Land Cruiser was delivered to Costa Rica when new, and was recently rotisserie restored to its factory configuration, with just break-in miles since completion. All of the body panels and even the floorboards are original to the vehicle, proven by the factory spot welds still in place. Only OEM rubber parts were used, with the factory Arctic White paint expertly applied. It rides on new BFG Mud Terrain tires and the original painted steel wheels.
It_s worth taking the time to look underneath this vehicle, as the undercarriage is as clean as the top side, with a fully restored and repainted chassis, new hubs and brakes, and restored dual-range 4WD transfer case. Under the hood, the 3.0 litre diesel engine is clean and tight, with fully restored injectors and glo-plugs. These engines are world-renowned for their durability and utility, and this example is reported to run beautifully. Mated to a four-speed manual transmission and full 4WD drive capability and, with the desirable side-by-side _ambulance_ style rear doors and removable hardtop, it is simply one of the most sought after styles of Land Cruiser in the world. It starts readily, pulls with authority, and exhibits the kind of torque only available from a diesel engine. Lock the Warn hubs, engage the ultra-low creeper gear, and prepare to be amazed at the steep hills and snow drifts you can conquer with ease.
With an outstanding original body, a brand new interior (except for the original seat belts), and a fresh restoration throughout, we encourage you to look closely at this rare Land Cruiser BJ40. As the longest-running series in Toyota_s distinguished history, the Land Cruiser has earned its place in many great classic vehicle collections, and the very best examples will no doubt continue to be in demand for many years.
