The fins war of the 1950s were a time like no other in American car design. Starting in 1948, the small appendages that appeared on Cadillac_s rear quarter panels steadily grew until they reached unheard of proportions. Led by Virgil Exner, Chrysler_s cars had huge fins and Chevrolet was not far behind, but the ultimate statement came from Cadillac in 1959. A twin rocket-inspired tail lamp set on a long sweeping fin that rode atop a 130-inch wheelbase made for a style that was unmatched in the history of the automobile. Cadillac_s cars for 1959 were long, streamlined, elegant, and sophisticated. Whether it was a sedan or convertible, the twin rocket tail fin was a dazzling styling feature that could make Buck Rogers himself blush with envy.
Offered here is Cadillac_s finest for 1959, the Eldorado Cadillac Biarritz convertible. Selling for an amazing $7,401 when new, it was a car that stole the attention from anything else at the country club parking lot. This example comes complete with documentation from the prestigious Cadillac Historical Society, indicating that it carries the special "S O" in its data trim tag denoting it as a _Special Order_ car. It states that the excited new owner not only wanted the flashy top of the line model but also wanted to stand apart by ordering a one of one special color; Cadillac's lovely Kensington Green sharply set off with eye-catching white interior and a white convertible top. The fine white leather wraps around the ultra-rare bucket seat option of which only 99 Eldorados were fitted. The dashboard is reminiscent of the jet age that was all-the-rage in the late 1950s with a deep inset steering wheel and several gauge pods that flank its large speedometer. As a true luxury car, this Eldorado Biarritz carries a host of options including AM radio with rear speaker, Autronic eye, power windows, fog lamps, six-way power front seat, power door locks, vent windows, remote trunk release with assisted pull-down, and beautiful wide whitewall tires. Power for this Eldorado comes from a 390 cubic-inch V-8 with three two-barrel Rochester carburetors rated at 345 horsepower, more than enough power for cruising at modern highway speeds and beyond. The engine compartment is nicely detailed with correct colors and it even retains its factory accessory washer and anti-freeze bottle. Driving is easy thanks to GM_s Hydra-Matic transmission and its immense wheelbase allows it to ride like a magic carpet. The trunk is also correct with its factory mats and jack instruction sticker still attached.
The 1959 Cadillac is a car that literally defined an era of American car design. Never before had styling reached such heights and never again would cars see such enormous length and fashion. Quite simply, it was long, it was low, and it was as elegant as a car could ever be. With a one-of-one striking color combination and factory bucket seats, along with its excellent condition, extensive documentation, and dedication to originality, this Eldorado Biarritz is destined to continually impress in the garage, at the country club and most certainly on the open road.
