Antoni Clavé i Sanmartí (1913-2005)
The contemporary Spanish painter and sculptor Antoni Clavé was born in 1913 in Barcelona. From 1926-1932, he attended evening classes at the Escuela de Artes y Oficios, and worked as a house painter until 1932. He began his autodidactic artistic career with copying works by old masters, for instance Velázquez and Goya. Afterwards, Clavé began creating illustrations for children’s books and designs for promotional and movie posters (including Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer). In 1939, he settled in Paris, where he worked as a cartoonist and illustrator. In 1944, he met Pablo Picasso, who became a close friend. Picasso had a deep influence on Clavé’s artistic development towards abstraction. From 1946 to 1955, he completed numerous designs for ballets and theaters in Paris, Munich, London, and New York. In 1965, he started working almost exclusively as a freelance artist, putting a focus on graphic works starting in 1965 and collages as of the 1970s. His work has been on display in numerous exhibitions at home and abroad, such as in London, Venice (Biennial), Budapest, Tokyo, Cologne, Zurich, and Madrid. Cavé has also received several awards, such as the Honorary Medal of Fine Arts, Madrid, in 1984. (fea)
