Mark Tobey (1890-1976)
Mark George Tobey - the forerunner of the ‘Abstract Expressionism’ - was born in 1890 in Centerville in the United States and died 1976 in Basel, Switzerland. His works show the influence of the Far East and calligraphic art. Among his best known works, there are the ‘White Writings’ (since 1944), in which network-like structures spread on a clear background. Tobey studied at the Art Institute in Chicago and worked as an industrial designer, portrait painter, and fashion illustrator for Vogue. In 1958, Tobey exhibited at the Biennale of Venice and thereby received international recognition. (msc)
