Description
After Bartolome Esteban Murillo (Spanish, 1617-1682), 19th century. "Vision of Saint Anthony", oil on canvas, apparently unsigned. Devotional or ecclesiastic painting depicting an ethereal celestial scene with Saint Anthony of Padua embracing a small child as putti or cherubs look on. Framed approximately 19.5" x 23". Unframed approximately 14" x 17.825". Provenance: From the Private Collection of the Owner of Chelsea House.
Condition
Painting has not been relined. Stretcher has been replaced. Stretcher impressions to recto (original stretcher was wider than current). Even craquelure throughout; may benefit from stabilization. One patch to verso corresponding within-painting to upper left quadrant of recto. Scattered in-painting throughout; predominantly to margins (likely repairs to frame rubbing), figure of Saint Anthony. Stretcher is encircled by adhesive (appears to be non-archival).
