Condition:
The painting is in good condition consistent with the age. There are tiny craquelure and a few marks overall, a few minimal loss of color. Edges and corners shows rubbed spots due to the frame. A few retouched spots can be seen under UV light affecting the lower part and the edges in some places. The frame shows usual signs of age and wear as well as tears and loss of color at the upper edge. The dimensions are 40.5 x 60.5 cm and the frame measures 58.5 x 78 cm.
Carl Irmer (1830-1900)
Born in Babitz near Wittstock, Carl Irmer received his first lessons from the landscape painter August Becker in Dessau. Later, he studied under Hans Gude at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf, where he settled. Irmer went on study trips within Germany, Vienna, to Paris and to Brussels, but lived very secluded. He received several awards such as the Vienna World Exhibition medal in 1873, and from 1860 to 1892 exhibited regularly paintings and watercolors at the Berliner Akademie-Ausstellung, from 1893 at the Große Berliner Kunstausstellung. In 1891 he became professor of landscape painting at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf. Irmer created mainly landscapes of intimate lyrical mood. (msc)
