Roman Pottery Flagon
Roman Pottery Flagon
Item Details
Description
Rome, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. This pottery vessel -- a flagon for liquids like water or wine -- has a bulbous body, flared lip, and strap handle formed from a sloped shoulder. There is cream slip pigment on the surface of the vessel and it has a slightly flared foot. Flagons like this required more skill than average kitchen ware, and evidence from Roman Britain suggests that there were specialized pottery workshops solely for producing these items, like that found at Sulloniacae, a small settlement placed strategically on the road between London and Verulamium to sell to travellers. Similar examples have also been found at Pompeii. Size: 5" W x 7.5" H (12.7 cm x 19 cm)Provenance: From the private collection of Dr WC Hagen.
