Description
This is a very fine and vintage carved wooden mask from the Pende of the DRC or Congo, central Africa. A tall grass headdress and various pigments adorn this fantastic example. This mask of the mbuya type belongs in the context of Pende men's fraternities that performed masquerades for the entire community. Although the costume is missing, this work can be identified by its horned coiffure with receding hairline. The mask represents pumbu,a Chief, or strong warrior, or the "executioner," a man who killed another human being and thus commands fear and respect. The mask itself measures 16 x 8 inches. A metal display stand will also be included.
