Item: Political Photo, Rooster Guard, Democratic Party

Date: 1891

Size: 11 1/8 x 14 1/4 inches

Albumen print photo depicting a group of men of various ages all holding canes with handles in the shape of a rooster. Included in the group is a police officer in the upper left corner. The only people not holding canes are two boys in the front, a man in the rear holding a US flag and an African American man in the back row who is holding a parade sign. Printed title at bottom of mount board reads: Rooster Guard. 1870-1891. Offciers, Fred. J. Mersheimer, Capt., W.T. Hadden, Sec., Gus. Eigenrauch, Treas., Jesse Sketchly, Sergt.-at...." (I suspect the chipped off word is "Arms".) Perhaps the organization has it ties with the early official symbol of the Democratic Party --the Crowing Rooster (established around 1840). Image was found in southeastern Pennsylvania and not surprisingly, most of the officers have names of Germanic descent.
