Description
This vintage bronze fertility sculpture from the Lobi or Gan peoples featured exquisitely-crafted twisted bronze male and female figures with elaborate hairstyles conjoined at the hips with a single pair of tubular legs with feet. The Lobi and Gan are ethnic groups in Burkina Faso. Such works were forged with ornamental element made using the lost-wax casting method, in which a clay mold was made around a modeled wax form. The mold was then heated and the wax poured out, after which molten brass or other metal was poured in and solidified in the form of the original wax model. The sculpture is 12-3/8 inches tall, 2-3/8 inches wide, and 1-1/2 inches deep.
