Item Details
Description
The story of Nathanyah - the aim, ambition, and outlook of Erez Yisorel's youngest colony.
The booklet is in English and Yiddish. Back cover in English.
Printed by the "Bnei Binyamin" organization. Tel Aviv, 1928.
An extremely rare booklet. Is not listed by the Bibliography of the Hebrew Book and has never been seen in auctions!
The booklet contains calculations, tables, plans, advertisements (among others, of the "Ha'Note'ah" Association which was founded by the "Bnei Binyamin" federation), photocopies of letters and other important documents related to the establishment of the moshava.

Among the photographs:
"Peasants working the land for the first time", "Scenery of the sea-shore", "View from the hills of the moshava to the planting area the and the sea-shore, which can be seen from the tents of the first settlers". In addition, a large photograph of Nathan Straus, whom "the new village was built to commemorate his name" Another photograph depicts "Mr. and Mrs. Straus receiving oranges and grapefruits". Another photograph shows the members of "Bnei Binyamin" celebrating the foundation of the Bnei Binyamin quarter in Hertzlia.
At the end of the book, a folded map of the Land of Israel, highlighting the new settlement of Netanya.
Impressive booklet with many photographs reviewing the history of the moshava Netanya, which eventually became "the capital of the Sharon" - the seventh largest city in Israel and the largest city in the area of the Sharon.
Due to the ideological-political belonging of Bnei Binyamin to the right-wing of the Yishuv, it did not receive the cooperation or assistance of the leadership of the Yishuv and the Zionist Federation and it was forced to rely on its own monetary sources, which were meager. Under these conditions, Bnei Binyamin, headed by its secretary, Oved Ben Ami, initiated the founding of Netanya.
Raising funds for the new settlement began in 1928. Oved Ben Ami and Itamar ben Avi travelled to the USA and Europe; yet returned with no significant results. However, they hoped their visit will spur the well-known Jewish philanthropist Natan Straus to support the enterprise. In a greeting telegram for his 80th birthday, they promised to call the new settlement in his name: "Netanya". Indeed, he was eventually one of the greatest donators of lands for the new settlement.
On December 18 1928, a few workers came to dig the first well. Two months later, on February 18 1929, the first five settlers built their tent on the land. Additional settlers joined them in the following weeks.
Netanya was announced a city in 1948.
