Description
A booklet of the "Programme for the Arrival and Reception for his Excellency Sir John Chancellor, the High Commissioner and Commander-in-Chief". The event took place on the sixth of December 1928. The booklet is written in three languages: Hebrew, English and Arabic (the cover is in English).
The reception spread over two says - from Port Said to Jerusalem.
According to the programme, his Excellency will arrive in Port Said on the fifth of December 1928 and will be greeted by the Chief of the Palestine Police.
At exactly 9:00, his Excellency and Lady Chancellor will descend the ship and at 15:00 will sail on a special steam boat from Port Said to Eastern Qantara. There, at 17:00, they will be greeted by the general director of the Palestine Railroads. In the middle of the night, December 6, at 01:30, his Excellency will leave Eastern Qantara on a special train, which will take him to Jerusalem.
At 10:15 his Excellency and Lady Chancellor will leave the train. They will be greeted by the Chief Secretary of the government and Mrs. Lock. They will be introduced to the supreme judge, the commander of the royal air force and additional officials, who are mentioned by the invitation. This will be accompanied by an honor guard and the orchestra of the Palestine Police. All this will take five minutes and his Excellency will leave the train station at exactly 10:20.
At 10:25, the royal couple will travel by car, accompanied by officers on horseback, to Jaffa gate.
From here on, the schedule is tight: his Excellency and the Lady will drive around Jerusalem, shaking the hands of all the important figures of Jerusalem: British, Jews and Arabs - in order not to disturb the balance.
The balance was maintained also during the speech of the mayor of Jerusalem, which by means of a translator, will be voiced three times, each time in one of the official languages. His Excellency's response will also be voiced three times. The booklet before us is also written in the three official languages.
We shall not weary our readers with all the handshakes … the most important thing is that at the end, the royal letter of appointment will be read and his excellency will be sworn in.
