Markus Lüpertz (b. 1941)

Markus Lüpertz, born in Reichenberg in 1941, is one of the most important contemporary German artists. His work has been influencing the German art for over 50 years. Lüpertz' artistic career began in the 1960s, when he moved to Berlin and where he was co-founder of the cooperative gallery ‘Großgörschen 35’ together with other artists of the West Berlin Bohème. In the 1970s he became a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe and was appointed director of the Düsseldorf Academy of Art from 1988 to 2009. At the same time Lüpertz was extremely productive and constantly developed his own style. He was influenced by legends of the ancient world, literature, art history and history, in particular German history of the 20th century, which he processed in some of his cycles. Moreover, Lüpertz was engaged deeply with sculpture. Lüpertz stylized himself as a ‘painter-prince’ and genius. Lüpertz received numerous honors and awards. He was awarded the Villa Romana Prize in 1970, and the prize of the German Critics Association in 1971. His works are included in collections of major international art museums such as the Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, as well as the Museo de Bellas Artes in Bilbao.
