Emil Schumacher (1912-1999)
Emil Schumacher studied from 1932 to 1935 at the School of Applied Arts in Dortmund and then worked as a freelance painter. In 1939 he was conscripted as a draftsman in an armaments factory and worked there until 1945. After the war, Schumacher again devoted himself entirely to painting, and founded in 1947 the artists' association ‘Junger Westen’. Initially coming from representational painting, he developed during the 1950s under the influence of the upcoming ‘Art Informel’ his own abstract visual language, dominated by color, investigating its intrinsic value and its psychological effects on the viewer. In 1959, Schumacher participated in the documenta 6 in Kassel and in 1961 at the Venice Biennale, which helped him to international fame. Schumacher held professorships at the academies in Hamburg and Karlsruhe and received since 1948 numerous international honors and awards. The Emil Schumacher Museum is located in his hometown Hagen.
