Daniel Spoerri (born 1930)

Born in Romania, Daniel Spoerri emigrated with his mother, a Swiss citizen, to Switzerland in 1942. In Zurich and later in Paris, he studied classical dance and pantomime. In the 1950s, Spoerri worked as an assistant director to Gustav Rudolf Sellner at the State Theatre in Darmstadt. In 1959, he moved to Paris and met Jean Tinguely, Arman, Yves Klein and Francois Dufrêne. He founded the ‘Edition MAT’ and published his first multiples. In addition, he produced his first objects, especially the famous ‘Tableaux Pièges’ (Fallenbilder). In 1960, Spoerri co-founded the group ‘New Realism’. In 1968, he established the ‘Eat-Art Edition’ and opened a restaurant in Düsseldorf, which existed until 1972. There, he performed with Joseph Beuys, Ben Vautier and Dieter Roth and other major artists. From 1978 to 1982, Spoerri taught ‘Three-dimensional Design’ at the Cologne Werkschulen, and from 1983 to 1989 he was a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. In 2009, he opened the restaurant ‘Eat Art’ and the exhibition center ‘Ab Art’ in Hadersdorf am Kamp. Spoerri's works are on display in many important museum collections, including the Tate Britain, the MoMA, the Museum Ludwig Cologne, the Centre Georges Pompidou and the MUMOK in Vienna.

Hans Bernhard Luginbühl (1929-2011)

Born in Bern, Luginbühl trained as a sculptor and then worked as a freelance artist, partly in collaboration with his wife and his three sons. Since 1965, he lived on a farm in Mötschwil on which later was installed the sculpture park of the Luginbühl Foundation. Luginbühl is well recorded for his monumental metal sculptures, for which he collected material at scrap yards and industrial plants. In addition, his combustion actions of wooden structures called the public's attention. In addition to his sculptural work, he has worked as a film director. Luginbühl has exhibited twice at the documenta in Kassel. Today, the old abattoir in Burgdorf hosts a museum in his honor. Numerous of his sculptures can be found in public spaces, for instance the ‘Große Giraffe’ and ‘Silver Ghost’ in Zurich, as well as ‘Kleiner Zyklop’ in front of the Hamburger Kunsthalle. (fea)
