Student of Henri Gervex. A study of the painting "Rolla" by Henri Gervex. The original was displayed for only a short time at the Salon in Paris before being removed for its display of immorality. The painting,perhaps the most famous "morning after" scene in history, depicts Jacques Rolla, wealthy but now bankrupted by his debauched lifestyle, on the verge of suicide, spending his final night with a courtesan named Marie. The true scandal of the painting wasn't the nude figure of the courtesan, but rather the display of clothing strewn beside the bed. Gervex ended up showing the painting at Bague's gallery on the fashionable Chaussee d Antin, where all of Paris came to view it. The original, recently offered at auction was estimated between $500,000 - $700,000. Oil on canvas painting. 20" X 24".
