In thrifty lines skillfully captured portrait of a young woman, maybe the artist’s wife, Ella Grigorieva
Condition:
The sheet is faintly toned and soiled and bears a small water stain in the lower image area. It is possibly trimmed. The overall condition is good, consistent with age. The frame shows slight signs of age and use, but is otherwise the condition is good. The sheet measures 28.3 x 23.9 cm. The framed dimensions are 35 x 31.5 cm.
Boris Dimitrevitch Grigorjeff (1886-1939)
Boris Dimitrevitch Grigorjeff was born in Moscow. From 1904 he studied at the local Stroganoff Drawing School, and from 1907 to 1912 at the Art Academy in St. Petersburg. He also participated in exhibitions at the Salon of the Impressionists and Mir Issukusstwa club whose member he was. 1918 Grigorjeff was appointed a professor at the Stroganov Academy in Moscow, but fled the following year, first to Berlin and then moved to Paris in 1921, where he exhibited among others at the Salon d'Automne and the Galerie Bernheim Jeune. Grigorjeffs works are in the collections of many international museums in Moscow, Leningrad, Paris, Venice and in the United States. (fea)
