Philippe Halsman (1906-1979)
Philippe Halsman first studied electrical engineering in Dresden. He moved to Paris at the age of 25, where he devoted his work to photography and studied at the Sorbonne. He became known as a portrait and fashion photographer and worked for several decades for the magazine Life. In 1945, he was named president of the American Society of Magazine Photographers. His series of ‘Jump’ portraits featuring important personalities such as Nixon and Dalí received international recognition. In 1960, he spent some time in Russia, where he portrayed the political elite for Life. In 1963, he became a member of the Famous Photographers School. In 1977, works of his were represented at the documenta 6 in Kassel. The National Portrait Gallery in Washington devoted a retrospective to his work in 1998. (cko)
