In opposition to the Classisim prevailing at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts Classicism, the German students Julius Overbeck and Franz Pforr founded in 1809 the ‘Lukasbund’. Along with other students they went to Rome in 1810 where they led an almost monastic, strictly moral life in the monastery St. Isidoro and created a Catholic religiously dominated art by returning to the art of Dürer, Holbein and Italian painters such as Raphael, Fra Angelico and Giotto. The name ‘Nazarener’ was given probably with mock tendency by the Roman citizens. Only later it became the stylistic term for the art of the members of the ‘Lukasbund’ and its circle.

Condition:
The painting is in good condition with minor signs of age and wear. Along the edges partially rubbed, at the lower right corner a tiny pin hole. Occasionally thin craquelure, under UV-light minimal touch-ups. The frame in very good condition. The dimensions of the painting measure 17 x 21.2 cm, the frame’s dimensions are 25.5 x 21 cm. (nlu)
