Condition:
The paint surface has darkened somewhat; the lower part of the canvas shows a convexe dent, otherwise, it is in good condition. No evidence of retouching under UV light. The frame is only minimally worn.

Oskar Laske (1874-1951)
At a young age, Oskar Laske was trained by the landscape painter Anton Hlavacek. After having studied architecture under Otto Wagner at the Vienna Academy, Laske worked as a freelance architect, and as a painter from 1904. He painted mostly watercolors during various trips throughout Europe and North Africa. His favorite subjects were landscapes, piazzas and genre scenes. During the First World War, Laske was also active as a war painter.

The cheerful narrative style and an expressive color range are characteristic of the artist’s works. Laske was also a graphic artist and book illustrator, as well as a member of the Hagenbund from 1907 and the Vienna Secession from 1924. In 1928, Laske joined the Vienna Künstlerhaus. Works by Oskar Laske are in the collections of the Heeresgeschichtliche Museum, the Belvedere Museum and the Leopold Museum in Vienna. (cko)
