A typical veduta in Italy, where the painter sojourned regularly in the second half of the 19th century because of his Italian wife
Condition:
The paint surface has darkened somewhat and shows typical craquelure and small paint losses. The inspection under UV light reveals some strokes of retouching within the depiction. The canvas has been relined and the varnish has been renewed. The frame is slightly chipped.
Carl Gustav Rodde (1830-1906)
Born in Danzig, Carl Gustav Rodde studied at the local arts and crafts school under the guidance of Johann Karl Schultz. In 1852 he changed to the Düsseldorf Art Academy and specialized in landscape painting under Johann Wilhelm Schirmer and Hans Gude. After completing his studies, he settled for a time in Munich. Since 1958, he went regularly to Italy and worked in the cities of Weimar, Gdansk, Düsseldorf and Berlin. (cko)
