Pierre Chareau (1883-1950)

The furniture artist applied to the École des Beaux Arts in 1900, but was rejected during the recording competition. From 1903-14 Chareau was draftsman at the Paris branch of the English furniture and decoration manufactory Waring & Gillow. In 1919 he founded his own factory and showroom ‘La Boutique’ in Paris. Over the years Chareau collaborated among others with art dealer Jeanne Bucher, painter and ceramist Jean Lurçat and architect Robert Mallet-Stevens. In 1919 he made his debut at the Salon d'Automne, two years later he became a member. In 1928 Chareau was a co-founder of the Congrès Internationaux d'Architecture Moderne (CIAM). In the coming years, he joined several artists' associations, for example, the Comité de Patronage de L'Architecture. In 1940 Chareau relocated to the USA, where he lived until his death. During his life, the artist dealt with the three complementary fields of furniture design, interior design and architecture. In furniture design he turned away from Art Deco at an early stage and took up a personal formal language aside fashionable trends. Beginning with the classic pieces with precious wood veneer, over the course of ten years he developed wood furniture combined with wrought. As an interior designer, Chareau used furniture to structure space based on the principle of flexibility. In the field of architecture, in turn, he started with modest, restrained modern buildings. With his convertible elements the building interior seems dynamic, by means of sliding walls cinematographic effects can be achieved. Chareau’s furniture can be seeen among others at the Musée National d'Art Moderne in Paris and also in numerous hotels (Tours, Grand Hôtel), private apartments (Boulevard Saint-Germain, apartment of Dalsace; Rue Le Tasse, house of D. Dreyfus; East Hampton, House & Atelier of Robert Motherwell) and public buildings (Pavilion of the Société des Artistes Décorateurs, furnishing for a French Embassy).
