Civil War US Diaries of J. W. Lucas (1842-1916) 89th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Soldier and Andersonville Prisoner
Two items including a hand written diary which describes the 89th's precise movements from 10/26/1862 to 12/5/1862 and a hand written diary dating from 9/4/1864 to 2/21/1865 describing his prison conditions (he was captured on 9/23/1863), the movement of prisoners from Macon to Savannah area stockades, Camp Davidson, Camp Lawton, scurvy medicine, blistered gums, his inability to walk, boarding the hospital steamer George Sayer and then the Star of Annapolis, Fortress Monroe, the paroling process, the Sanitary Commission and his return home to Hillsboro, Ohio on 12/13/1864; provenance: from family descendants
