Item Details
Description
20th AD. A hollow-formed gold crescent pendant with granule detailing to one face, ribbed suspension loop. 1.65 grams, 30mm (1 1/4"). Property of a Swindon, UK collector. Pendants such as these were extremely popular in the Roman Imperial period. Lunate pendants are known earlier, but their true rise to fashion comes only in the later Hellenistic period. During the Roman Imperial period they constitute a very common ornament whose form is encountered in many different settings. They are well represented in paintings, such as the Faiyum mummy portraits from Egypt. The imagery seems to be related to Diana, goddess of the moon and patron deity of women and fertility, but they could also be connected to the worship of the goddess Isis. [No Reserve]
