Roman Pendant with Cornelian Intaglio with Hybrid Creature, c. 2nd Century A.D.
Oval red intaglio engraved with a hybrid creature depicted in profile facing left, the body of a rooster and the head of a helmeted warrior. It carries a shield and a spear. Set in gold pendant with fine beading pattern frame and wide ridged suspension loop.
Similar hybrid creatures in ancient mythology were known as sirens, harpies, sphinxes and hippalectryon.
Size:3 cm L (including loop) - 1 3/16 inches
Material:Cornelian and gold - total weight= 4.8 grms
