19th-early 20th century AD. A bronze ring formed of a circular double hoop, attached large flat chameleon plaque with curved tail and applied circular eye. 39 grams, overall: 26.79mm, internal diameter 18.80mm (approximate size British R, USA 8 3/4, Europe 19.00, Japan 18) (1"). Ex Bottomley collection, West Yorkshire, UK. Among the Senufo people from West Africa, chameleons represent the primordial animal in the creation myth and such rings were worn exclusively by men. In divination, the chameleon’s physical features and behaviour are transposed and serve as images for the initiator's teachings. [No Reserve]
